Calendar is Here

Since the very beginning, our mission has been to provide a safe and private place to help you organize anything related to caring for someone. Thanks to your feedback, we’ve made tons of enhancements (from better printing, to more complete medication fields), and implemented a bunch of new features, from lockable notes and uploads, to increased file sizes per upload.

From the day we launched, though, you’ve had a consistent request—a calendar, focused on the individual you’re caring for. A calendar separate from your own, but shareable with your family and Helpers.

And today, we’re excited to introduce the CareZone Calendar, designed especially with your Loved Ones in mind.

Calendar now appears in your CareZone account

Viewing your new calendar

Your new Calendar lies right below the CareZone Journal in the left menu. Here, you’ll be able to:

  • organize and schedule one-off appointments
  • schedule recurring appointments, such as physical therapy visits
  • share the calendar with your Helpers
  • assign appointments to Helpers
  • ask your Helpers to volunteer
  • visualize items that have yet to be assigned to anyone

We’ve included two viewing options to help you stay on top of your appointments. First is day view, which looks like this:

CareZone Calendar day view

And if you prefer having a wider window into your events, try Month view:

(We’re also now hard at work on a Week view! Stay tuned!)

Adding events

Adding a new event is a breeze. Just click on the day it occurs and add in the details. We’ve included fields for:

  • name of the event
  • location
  • event description
  • start and end time
  • whether or not it’s recurring

And we know you probably have Helpers, so like To-dos, we’ve allowed you to assign events to yourself or to your Helpers. For example, you might ask someone to help you get groceries for Mom one day…

Events that need a volunteer will visually stand out (see events above, with the pink exclamation point), so you and your family will know where help is needed.

We’re also thinking of adding notifications to these assignments, so you’ll know when you’re being depended upon (and you’ll be able to tell someone else you’re depending on them).

Schedule away

So there you have it—Calendar is finally here!  We’ll constantly be working on and improving it, so if you have an idea, suggestion, or request, let us know by sending an email to our Community Manager Marssy.

On a parting note, in order to get this calendar to you as quickly as possible, we’re launching it without iPhone or mobile site support. For now, anyway; integrating your Loved One’s calendar into all devices is one of our top priorities.

Meet CareZone Broadcast

When life happens, we reach out to those closest to us. It’s instinct.

When our social and family circles grow wider and wider, though, reaching out gets more challenging. Email feels cold and distant. A public social network isn’t appropriate for many topics. And calling everyone takes time (especially if you have chatty family members) and energy—often, just when you need your energy most.

But you want to get your message out quickly.

And that’s why we’re excited to introduce our newest feature: CareZone Broadcast, available now in the CareZone iPhone app.

What does it do?

It’s simple. Like email, you start by choosing a bunch of recipients you’d like to send a message to. Choose from your Contacts (CareZone or iPhone), or enter numbers manually. Tap a button to record a voice message, and then send it to everyone at once. Up to 100 phones can ring simultaneously. Our status page shows who received your message, who got a voicemail, and who couldn’t be reached.

When might I need it?

If you’ve ever run a phone tree, you’ll know exactly when to use it. Broadcast is excellent for those moments that keep people rocking in their chairs, waiting for news. Let your extended family know when your Loved One gets out of surgery. When your child is born. When you get the update on that x-ray.

It’s also useful for more mundane tasks, like letting the entire 3rd grade class know that the trip to Alcatraz was cancelled due to weather, or the family reunion picnic has changed venues. Email’s great, but there’s still no substitute for ringing someone’s phone—and that’s what Broadcast is for: getting the word out quickly to people who need to know.

How does it work?

First and most importantly, Broadcast is currently only available in CareZone for iPhones and iPads. For our Android friends, worry not: we most certainly have our sights set on an Android version, and we’re working on it. The same applies to our web browser users. The iPhone makes this kind of thing especially easy, which is why we’ve started there.

Now that’s out of the way, let’s check out Broadcast in action (even better: see the video up top to get the full run-down) .

Open the app, choose a Loved One, and select “Broadcast,” which now appears at the top of your menu.

CareZone Broadcast appears at the top of your iPhone menu.Choose up to 100 recipients from either your CareZone contacts and Helpers, your iPhone contact list, or type numbers in yourself.

Record your message (you can always re-record it before sending) and then send it by tapping on “Send Broadcast.”

Next, you’ll see a status page, which lists each recipient and tells you whether or not your message has failed, gone to voicemail (your message will go to their voicemail), or been delivered successfully. We’ve done our best to take all the mystery out of this experience.

CareZone Broadcast status page

Ready for a test drive?

If you’re one of our iPhone users, please take Broadcast for a spin and let us know how it works! Even better, if you try now, you’ll receive $10 worth of Broadcasts! It’ll be totally free during the trial period, and after, each Broadcast will cost $0.99 ( for up to 100 recipients).

In case you still don’t have the CareZone iPhone app, download it today! And Android friends, remember we have you in mind, so stay tuned for the soon-to-be-launched Android app!

Announcing the Official CareZone Mobile App!

CareZone Mobile, available in the Apple App Store todayWhen you’re caring for someone, chances are you’re constantly on-the-go. I know that’s the case here.

To ensure that you’re always connected and in touch with what’s happening with your Loved Ones’ care, we’re thrilled to announce the official release of the CareZone iPhone app.

You may remember that we released an early version of the app not too long ago; during this period, we collected lots of valuable information from the users testing it out, and we applied that to what we’ve released today.

CareZone Mobile is here.

What does it do?

Our iPhone app has a great deal to offer. With it, you can:

  • access, add to, and edit your Journal
  • track medications
  • manage and invite Helpers
  • access a shared contacts list (added bonus: import your iPhone contacts, too!)
  • add, assign, and complete to-dos
  • write and edit notes
  • access your uploaded files
  • send a CareZone Broadcast message, an exciting new feature that lets you easily record a voice message and send it to up to 100 recipients at once. It’s currently a CareZone Mobile exclusive (only for iPhones).

What can’t it do?

Not a whole lot! That said, with our new iPhone app, you can’t:

    • upload files from your phone
    • access your CareZone Calendar
    • send photos to your Journal
    • lock notes or files
    • add Hugs to Journal entries

At the Apple™ App Store nearest you!

We’d love for you to try out our official app and let us know how it makes your life easier. You can find it in the App Store.

Oh, and we promise we haven’t forgotten you, Android users! We’re currently working hard to develop an app just for you, too.

We’re looking forward to hearing your comments, suggestions, and ideas! Send an email to our Community Manager, Marssy.

CareZone’s CEO Jonathan Schwartz on the Silver Screen

Most of us have had our heads down lately (thanks, Calendar), but our CEO Jonathan has been making the rounds on television.

First, on October 18, he visited CNN’s Newsroom to talk about, among other things, the importance of online privacy when caring for your loved ones. Check him out:

Next up, on October 28, Jonathan headed over to chat with three technology reporters on NBC’s Press:Here. The topic this time spanned Jonathan’s departure from Sun Microsystems and his journey to co-founding CareZone.

Stay tuned! We’ll do our best to give you a heads up next time we’re on TV. Be sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook for updates.

Upload Larger Files to CareZone

Photo by Marcin Wichary via Flickr

CareZone just got a whole lot bigger. Well, virtually, at least.

A few weeks ago, CareZone community manager Marssy had a chat with one of our users about file sizes. From what we’d seen, most folks using CareZone were using our uploaded files feature to store and share important documents (like birth certificates, medical records, legal files, and so on). But the person Marssy spoke with uses it differently.

Helpers: What They Can and Can’t Do

We strongly encourage you to invite Helpers into your account so it’s not just you carrying your Loved One’s torch. But before you invite your family and others in, I thought it might be helpful to explain what powers an Account Owner (the person who opened the account) has versus the Helpers that accept your invitation to help out. Let’s take a quick gander.

CareZone Seattle Settles In

CareZone Seattle just moved into the new office! It’s right on the edge of Capitol Hill, near First Hill, and just around the corner from some amazing coffee and food.

As you can see from the photos, we’re still settling in and getting things situated, but you get the gist.

Also, Stella the long-haired dachshund was with us during the shoot, as was Boomer the lab, and I can’t resist taking photos of adorable dogs.

(If you don’t have Flash and can’t see the slideshow above, here’s a link to the Flickr gallery.)

CareZone Goes to the Fair

Ok, so not a ferris-wheel-and-funnel-cake fair, but still a pretty great fair.

Earlier this week (September 19), CareZone San Francisco ventured over to University of California Berkeley for their Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS, or “eeks”) Career Fair. We’re always looking for bright minds to join our team, and we couldn’t have been happier with our UC Berkeley experience.

Representing CareZone were Jonathan, Sandro, Lark, Erin (the visiting Seattle office manager), and community manager/photographer Marssy.

(If you don’t have Flash and can’t see our slideshow at the top, here’s the photo set on Flickr.)

A Sneak Peek at Calendar

Calendar is near.

Given the frequency of Calendar requests in our feedback forum, I wanted to take a few minutes to offer you a sneak peek at a much-anticipated CareZone addition.

Look at What We’ve Done

Over the past two weeks, we’ve had some big announcements: the preview release of our new iPhone app, CareZone Hugs, and Email Your Journal, for instance.

There have been a few quieter feature updates, too—ones we didn’t shout from any mountaintops but that will certainly affect your CareZone experience. Let’s take a peek!

Give and Get Hugs with CareZone

Sometimes, words just don’t cut it. When they don’t, we hope CareZone Hugs will help.

You may have noticed a new, colorful element in your CareZone account. It looks like this:

The CareZone Hug Appears

That’s the mark of our brand new CareZone Hugs. We’ve integrated four expressions into your Journal for when words just aren’t enough.

Email your CareZone Journal

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could write in your CareZone Journal without logging in? Well, we’ve done our best to make that possible.

Your Journal now has a unique email address that allows you to write a new Journal entry just by sending an email from any device.

To send an email that appears in your Journal, find the Journal’s unique email address below the area where you normally enter text. You and your Helpers can use this special address to add new entries. Emails you or your Helpers send to this address will now appear directly in the Journal (go give it a try!).

And there’s no need to worry about protecting this email address from others—only email addresses associated with your CareZone account (yours and your Helpers’) will be able to successfully email your Journal. Others will simply be ignored.

Fancy new notifications

Until now, you had two options when a Journal entry or comment was added. Either:

    • receive an email letting you know a change was made, or
    • not receive any notification.

We’ve added a new option:

    • receive an email with the content of the new comment or entry included in the email message.

This new option is now the default option. You can modify the settings used to control this feature in your account settings, but more on this below.

We’re also very excited about a big new time-saver: you can reply to these email notifications. Your replies will then appear in your CareZone Journal. For instance, if one of your Helpers adds a comment or question in the Journal, simply respond by hitting “Reply” in your email client. Your response will appear as a comment on your Helper’s entry in the Journal!

So instead of logging in to CareZone repeatedly throughout the day, simply manage your Journal from your inbox. We’ve found that it’s incredibly useful (all bias aside).

Turning off the notifications

Not interested in receiving emails that contain Journal entries? No problem.

To turn off these new notifications, go to “Your settings,” like so:

…and you’ll see under “Email preferences” a box that, when unchecked, will disable these new types of notifications:

This will ensure that the email notifications you receive are simply alerting you to a comment, rather than showing you the comment.

If you’re an Account Owner, and you don’t want any of your Helpers receiving Journal entries or comments in their emails (for instance, if you’d rather not have information about your Loved One sent out in emails), check the box at the bottom:

If that box is checked, no Helpers will be able to see any Journal comments or entries in their notifications.

Really, it’s all up to you.

We genuinely hope you find these new features useful. Be sure to let me know if you have any questions, comments, or feedback!

CareZone Accounts for Epilepsy Caregivers

Epilepsy is among the least understood of major chronic medical conditions and over 200,000 new cases are reported each year. Today we’re pleased to announce that CareZone is partnering with the Epilepsy Foundation to enhance our service for caregivers that care for Loved Ones with seizure disorders.

Epilepsy Foundation is a long-running, non-profit organization dedicated to making life better for those suffering from seizures and epilepsy. As the nation’s leading organization in the fight to stop seizures, they offer a thriving community and a wealth of educational resources. Together, CareZone and Epilepsy Foundation are launching free CareZone accounts for epilepsy caregivers, pre-loaded with detailed information organized by seizure-type.

Keep Your Files Private with Locked Uploads

Your uploaded files are now completely in your control

One of our chiefest concerns at CareZone is privacy, privacy from every angle. We work diligently to ensure your caregiving experience is safe and private, but what about those you invite into CareZone as Helpers? Until recently, they could see everything you posted into CareZone — any Uploads, any Notes.

A few weeks back, we launched Locked Notes, which grants you the ultimate control over your Notes entries. And we’ve now done the same with Uploads.

Why You Should Track Medications

It's important to track your medications

There’s a major problem in the U.S.: something called “prescription adherence,” or really, lack thereof. It’s estimated that nearly half of people don’t take their medications in the way they’re prescribed.

If this were as simple as someone skipping pain medications or other types of (typically) one-off prescriptions, it might not be as pressing. But that’s not what’s happening.

What’s happening more often is that people with chronic illnesses (most commonly, those with hypertension, high cholesterol, or diabetes) are skipping the medicines that keep them healthier and, in some cases, keep them alive.

Finding Families in Need

Families in Need - Photo by photon_de via Flickr

We’ve been out and about lately, forging partnerships with organizations that address and support those caring for children and adults. The farther we reach, the more we learn about the unique needs of different demographics, maladies, or family situations. From one family to the next, nothing’s ever totally the same.

So given what we’ve learned from our early discussions with individuals and non-profits, we wondered what would happen if we started talking to enterprises about how they view caregiving. Sure, we know that sounds a bit strange, but enterprises employ people—and people, almost universally, find themselves caring for others in their family. And that takes a toll in the workplace, to say nothing on overall well-being.

Entering Medications Just Got Easier

Auto-Complete for Medications on CareZone

Some features change lives; others just make them a bit easier. Our newest feature, Auto-Complete for Medications, is one of the latter. We’ve gathered around 750 of the most common medications and supplements, and linked them to the CareZone Medications feature.

Introducing: Locked Notes

I’m happy to announce that, later this week, we’re releasing a highly anticipated feature on CareZone: Locked Notes!

Up until now, CareZone Notes have allowed you to organize written information and make it available to everyone with access to your account. Deciding who has access to those Notes, however, wasn’t a possibility—it was all (everyone) or nothing. After talking to our users, we learned that not all information is created equal. Many of you wanted more fine-grained controls.

Donating to Autism Speaks

Why we donated to Autism Speaks

I’d like to explain a donation my company’s making today to Autism Speaks—and all parents facing autism.

A little over a decade ago, my brother and his wife adopted a wonderful little boy from Romania, who was later diagnosed as having an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). He also turned out to be profoundly deaf.

A few years later, I had a child of my own, and he, too, had development issues to which my wife and I needed to pay particular attention.

Why We Built CareZone

Hello, and welcome to CareZone. My name is Jonathan Schwartz, and I’m our CEO. I wanted to take a minute to tell you about CareZone, and why we’re here for you.

By birth or by choice, everyone has a family. Familes are the first and oldest social network, and for people all across the world, being a part of a family has always been the most fundamental, unifying experience.
